PROFESSOR DANG VAN CHUNG FUND

Established with the vision of nurturing future generations of healthcare professionals, the Professor Dang Van Chung Fund was officially founded on 14th February, 2019, with the approval of VNU-HCM. It stands as a tribute to the late Professor Dang Van Chung, a pioneering figure in Vietnamese medicine. The fund was initiated through the dedication and collective effort of the leadership, staff, and faculty members of the University of Health Sciences.
Purpose and Activities
The Fund operates through community contributions and self-generated capital, with the goal of supporting educational development at the University of Health Sciences – VNUHCM. Its core activities include:
- Scholarships: Providing financial assistance to underprivileged medical students, enabling them to pursue their academic aspirations and become competent, ethical physicians and pharmacists.
- Scientific Research Support: Sponsoring faculty and students in carrying out research projects, and facilitating their participation in academic conferences both domestically and internationally to enhance professional development.
- Educational Support: Funding other educational activities at the University of Health Sciences – VNUHCM as approved by the Fund’s Executive Board.
The Fund is also authorised to seek donations from individuals and organisations who support its mission in advancing medical education.
Fund Management
The Fund is managed in accordance with financial regulations established by the VNU-HCM Development Fund, which oversees the receipt, management, accounting, reporting, and disbursement of all financial activities. The use of the Fund follows a detailed budget and implementation plan approved by its Executive Board.

Legacy of Professor Dang Van Chung
Professor Dang Van Chung (1913–1999) was a distinguished clinician, educator, and researcher, often referred to as a foundational figure in Vietnamese cardiology, having established what is now the National Heart Institute.
He was the first in Indochina to identify hypoglycemia caused by pancreatic tumors and documented many rare diseases such as congenital pulmonary artery dilatation, adrenal gland tumors, gout, and diabetes. Despite limited resources, he authored two renowned books on Internal Medicine and Treatment, along with thousands of teaching materials and research papers, which have served as cornerstone references for generations of medical students.
A Continuing Legacy
Today, his legacy is carried forward by his son, Prof. PhD MD. Dang Van Phuoc, the prominent internal medicine specialist and academic leader. He currently serves as:
- President of Honour, University of Health Sciences, VNU-HCM
- President of the Vietnam Heart Association
- Former Dean of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City
